This blogger has recently been exposed to Christian Fundamentalism through two interesting sources. As has been posted recently, I have been in a heated exchange with the author of an Evangelical apologetics website. Last evening I had the opportunity to attend a "debate" between the UNCG Atheists and Christian Fundamentalist apologists.
I have come away from the above experiences unsatisfied. Why can't these folks answer questions directly? As a friend of mine says, "If you feel the need to do penance for something, to relieve some guilt, go and have an argument with a true believer fundamentalist of any stripe."
In the case of the Evangelical apologetics website, my many questions essentially revolved around the main question of "Why should I accept as science what science has rejected?" The only answers I received involved statements about what he (the apologist) believed, NOT the reasons why.
In the case of the Christian debaters last evening, the question is "Why should anyone accept the assertion that the Bible/Christianity is the major authority for human belief and action, when reason does not support such?"
For any Fundamentalist Christians out there, please understand that you cannot change the mind of an atheist, who has accepted this worldview through reason, by not answering "why" questions. Oh, and using the Bible to support the Bible is not valid as it is circular reasoning.
Coming from a Roman Catholic background, I was not exposed to such blatant rejection of reason in support of a literal interpretation of the Bible. The Roman Catholic Church at least accepts reason and science (albeit subservient to Faith). Also, it does not depend on a literal interpretation of the Bible as its "Authority" comes from "Tradition" and "Scripture".
The main author of the Evangelical Apologetics blog was a Roman Catholic before accepting Evangelical/Fundamentalist Christianity. This blogger was a Roman Catholic before accepting atheism. This blogger changed his worldview based on evidence, logic and reason. This blogger does not understand why an educated and thoughtful person would go from SOME reason to NO reason.
As Susan from We can find 1,000,000 people who DON'T believe in God on Facebook says: "If you do not know the answers, why are you a Christian?"
