The Bible, Literalism and St Augustine

Jerry Coyne has posted on the Discovery Institute's challenge to a less-than-literal interpretation of the Bible. Of particular interest to this blogger are the comments about how literal St Augustine took the Bible. As a former Catholic who has heard positive things about St Augustine and also has been exposed to the Catholic less-than-literal interpretation of the Bible, it was surprising to find out that St Augustine was a literalist.
