Secular Morality

Hemant Mehta has posted an example of moral principles from a parent not raising her children with religious faith.  Do religious writings add anything here?  Since evidence supports the hypothesis that man created god, this blogger asks what is the purpose of the "middle man" of scripture, holy books, etc?
