C.I.N.O.

Many of us know the pejorative term conservative Republicans use toward their fellow party members who don't accept the entire right-wing package: R.I.N.O.s (Republican In Name Only).  Recent surveys, as noted here by Hemant Mehta, show a striking example of this phenonemon within American Catholicism.

This blogger would have no objection to use of the term C.I.N.O.s (Catholic In Name Only) to describe virtually all of personally known Catholics.

As Hemant says:

They like the community, but not the bullshit. They know Church thinking is stuck in the past but they’re moving forward with the times despite clinging to the Catholic title — even if there’s a contradiction there.

Eventually, maybe they’ll muster up the courage to shed the label entirely.
