Faith and Reason

Most people have a worldview shaped by whether faith or reason is the main guiding light.

It has been my experience that religious people, although they claim to be reasonable, have some assumptions before they use reason. For example, they assume there is a God, that Jesus resurrected, the Bible is inerrant and/or that miracles occur. The skeptic, or one who uses the scientific method appropriately, has no assumptions before addressing an issue.

I encourage religious people to ask themselves the following:

  • Do I cling to assumptions before using reason in the matter of religion?
  • Do I exclude religious questions from the process I use everyday to determine the truth of anything?
  • What does faith add to my understanding of reality?
  • Is there an alternative to the scientific method in seeking the truth without bias?
  • Do I value comfort and certainty above truth-seeking?
  • If God gave us reason, why shouldn't we use it in ALL aspects of our lives?
