It has been my experience that religious people, although they claim to be reasonable, have some assumptions before they use reason. For example, they assume there is a God, that Jesus resurrected, the Bible is inerrant and/or that miracles occur. The skeptic, or one who uses the scientific method appropriately, has no assumptions before addressing an issue.
I encourage religious people to ask themselves the following:
- Do I cling to assumptions before using reason in the matter of religion?
- Do I exclude religious questions from the process I use everyday to determine the truth of anything?
- What does faith add to my understanding of reality?
- Is there an alternative to the scientific method in seeking the truth without bias?
- Do I value comfort and certainty above truth-seeking?
- If God gave us reason, why shouldn't we use it in ALL aspects of our lives?
