Religious Motivations For A Political Position Are Irrelevant?

Austin Cline has posted on the question of whether a politician's religious motivations for taking a position are irrelevant, as two news reporters claim.  To quote, is this "an attempt to excuse religion from the normal standards and procedures that every other ideology is already subjected to?"
