Science And Trust

John Loftus has posted a "Quote of the day" regarding science and trust. This blogger emphasizes the difference between trust and faith. The former is based on evidence, the latter is based on an unwarranted leap into the unknown.

Francis Collins And Faith

Francis Collins, NIH Director, had stepped in it. Check this out from Jerry Coyne's blog.

Science: Is There An Alternative?

Austin Cline has posted a lengthy analysis of the question "Is there is an alternative to science in knowing reality?"

Why Should Anyone Believe?

From John Loftus' blog:

I maintain there is no way to conclude Jesus bodily arose from the grave even if he did. I can even grant you for the sake of your argument the existence of Yahweh and that he does miracles, but this changes very little. For the evidence shows us that an overwhelming large percentage of the Jews in Jesus' day did not believe even though they knew their Scriptures and even though they were there. So why should I believe? Why should anyone?

This blogger has wondered about this same point as long as memory allows.

Wrestling With Christianity

DagoodS has posted a heart-wrenching account of his process of deconversion. This blogger can very much relate to the emotions involved.

Faith and Reason

Most people have a worldview shaped by whether faith or reason is the main guiding light.

It has been my experience that religious people, although they claim to be reasonable, have some assumptions before they use reason. For example, they assume there is a God, that Jesus resurrected, the Bible is inerrant and/or that miracles occur. The skeptic, or one who uses the scientific method appropriately, has no assumptions before addressing an issue.

I encourage religious people to ask themselves the following:

  • Do I cling to assumptions before using reason in the matter of religion?
  • Do I exclude religious questions from the process I use everyday to determine the truth of anything?
  • What does faith add to my understanding of reality?
  • Is there an alternative to the scientific method in seeking the truth without bias?
  • Do I value comfort and certainty above truth-seeking?
  • If God gave us reason, why shouldn't we use it in ALL aspects of our lives?
